Toast the Holidays

Holiday Toasts

I’m fortunate enough to have spent three years backpacking in foreign lands. Travel impressed upon me the decorum in many countries whose inhabitants have a largely homogeneous culture and long-established traditions.

In Mexico, my husband and I became friends with a young man who wanted to strengthen his English. One evening, we joined him and his family for a rite of passage. It was a great surprise to us when he addressed every individual at the table, expressing gratitude for how each person had made an impact on his life. It felt special to be addressed in such a manner, and I will never forget this gentleman.

We can do well by ourselves, our family, our colleagues and friends if we practice this tradition here in the United States.

Sample Toasts

Humorous

“May you have warmth in your igloo, oil in your lamp, and peace in your heart.” – Inuit proverb

“Here’s to holly and ivy hanging up, and to something wet in every cup.” – Ogden Nash

Office

“To us and our success as a group this past year, and to you and your families for health, peace, and more wonderful times in the coming year.”

Christmas

“Be merry all, be merry all,
With holly dress the festive hall,
Prepare the song, the feast, the ball,
To welcome Merry Christmas.”

“Here’s to friends we’ve yet to meet,
Here’s to those here; all here I greet;
Here’s to childhood, youth, old age,
Here’s to prophet, bard and sage,
Here’s to your health-may all be bright
On this so special Christmas night.”

New Years

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.” – T.S. Eliot

“Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow ye diet.” – Anonymous

“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” – Edith Lovejoy Pierce
